We chose LastPass because of the ease of use. It's a lot easier to use than Keeper. It looked a lot nicer and was a lot more streamlined. The ease of use was one of the key things for it, really, that user-friendly interface.

How LastPass and Keeper compare in security 

Keeper Security often claims security superiority over LastPass, pointing to a past security incident as evidence. But here is what they do not mention: both Keeper and LastPass use the same advanced security measures, including AES-256 encryption, PBKDF2 hashing, secret key derivation, SHA-256 salting, URL and vault name encryption, and a zero-knowledge model to protect customer vaults. 

What they also fail to disclose is that in the last two years, LastPass has undergone a complete security transformation. LastPass built a new security and privacy infrastructure across all development and production environments, migrated to a purpose-built secure cloud platform, deployed a new fleet of managed end-user devices, and upgraded the digital vault’s security – including achieving ISO 27701 compliance. 

And despite what Keeper might suggest, LastPass has remained strong in the market. A 2023-2024 Password Manager Industry Report by Security.org shows that LastPass retained about 10% of the market, behind only Google’s Password Manager and Apple’s iCloud Keychain, and well ahead of Keeper Security. 

Here are a few other ways that LastPass security stands out: 

• Master password exposure protection: When a user creates or resets a master password, LastPass will check to see if the selected password has ever been exposed in a breach. Users will be alerted if the password chosen has been exposed and must choose a new master password to proceed.

I have personally used LastPass for years. Our consultants came to us with Keeper and LastPass as solutions. Their recommendation was Keeper because LastPass had a breach years ago and Keeper didn't. LastPass offers just two add-ons, one for Advanced SSO and another for Advanced SSO + MFA, while Keeper Security charges extra for basic features like dark web monitoring and secure file storage.

When evaluating Keeper Security, be sure to inquire about the costs of essential add-ons and potential annual price increases before committing.
