What is two-factor authentication?

Two-factor authentication requires users to provide an additional form of authentication on top of their password when logging into their account. This additional authentication could be a fingerprint, a texted code or many other options.

Two-factor authentication is a subset of multi-factor authentication. It requires you to identify yourself in two different ways, whereas multi-factor requires two or more forms of identifications.

How does it work?

Two-factor authentication adds a second login step for added protection. When you log in to your account, you will enter your username and password as usual. With two-factor authentication enabled, you will also be required to provide an additional form of authentication before you are granted access to your account. For example, you could be prompted to scan your fingerprint or enter a code.

When two-factor is enabled in your LastPass account, you’ll be asked for an additional authentication step after entering your master password. You can adjust your settings so that certain devices will be trusted and not require two-factor every time you log in. This added layer of security protects your LastPass account in the rare case that someone could guess, or brute force crack your master password. The hacker would need to know not only your master password, but also a second form of identification - which they do not have.

Do I need two-factor authentication?

We strongly encourage you to turn on two-factor authentication for your LastPass account and other essential accounts like email and social media. In the rare event that someone managed to steal or hack your password, you’d still be protected. Why not add an extra layer of security?
